The Puppy Page (Planned Litters)

Our litters are planed and raised with work ethic and breed type in mind. All parents are genetically screened for defects and represent a combination of performance and conformation aptitudes.

We have a "system" that we devised to help our pups grow to be great performance dogs. It starts with excellent condition and work ethic in the parents. Once the litter is on the ground we use early neurological stimulation exercises from day 3 through 16. These exercises subject the pups to neurological stimulation than is not normally present at that age. Several research studies have statistically proven that these stimulations help the nervous system grow and advance to a greater capacity than that which was exhibited in the control group.

Up until day 16 the litter and the dam reside with us in our bedroom. Between 2-3 weeks the litter is transfered to the family room in an x-pen on a large mat where they begin to explore. Believe it or not, they are ususally walking and starting to play at this age. Ears and eyes are open. Music, TV and other interesting sounds are played each day. Other dogs in our household are permitted to visit the litter through the x-pen. The dam is always permitted to go in and out of the x-pen. Our girls are happy and well adjusted and do not need to be locked in to properly raise a litter. The dam's interaction with us and with her doggie friends helps the pups learn that all is good!

Once in the x-pen the pups really come alive. Food is introduced at three weeks and the weaning process is a very gradual one from 3-6 weeks. At 6 weeks pups are introduced to an indoorpen on pine shavings and a large outdoor play yard with different surfaces, toys, tunnels and sounds. At 6 weeks pups are also given two free romps per day where they are exposed to the large paddocks and permitted to all out run....it is these sesions that help us start to see who the athletes are, who is dominant, who is bold....and just about everything else we want to see at home. Zoomies begin in earnest and a joyful puppy life unfolds.

At 8 weeks the first combo vaccine is given and the pups set out to explore the outside world. They come with us on car rides, to training class, sometimes to agility trials and on road trips. Trips to Home Depot and Petsmart are always made with a pup or two in tow. The manner in which a pup handles these first few "off-premises" visits is one of the most important characteristics we consider when picking a performance pup. A top notch pup must be bold, confident and fearless right off the bat.

We also do Volhards performance test at this time, along with some tests of our own that more accurately reflect toy drive, food drive and boldness. Pups are sent home with friends and are started on crate training and clicker training at this age.
