ADDENDUM TO PLAILS SHELTIE RANCH - PURCHASE AGREEMENT FOR PET PUPPY
Feeding:
We recommend: Pro Plan Puppy Chow. Provide the daily recommended allocation of food divided by four and feed this dog in its crate (4) times daily at: 8:00 a.m., 12 noon, 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., until the age of one (1).
If you are away from home during one of this dog's scheduled feedings, leave this dog's next scheduled allocation of food with water in its crate and, upon your return, continue with this dog's normal feeding schedule.
OUR TRAINING METHODS
If you wish to continue with our training methods, please adhere to the following instructions:
We suggest that you purchase a crate. Crate size for a sheltie is 200. Allow this dog to feed and sleep in its crate. Exercise this dog each time it is removed from its crate to continue with its housebreaking training. Never allow this dog to have the run of the house without supervision until you are certain that this dog is fully housebroken. Ideally, the crate should be used for night time sleep and for napping during the day. This dog /puppy should not spend more than 4-5 hours during the day, in its crate. Shelties are active dogs and are in need of exercise and space, even as a puppy.
Your puppy comes from parents that are proven to be competitive show dogs. They are trained in a variety of disciplines and were chosen for breeding, in part, because of their intelligence and ability to learn. In short, they are very very smart.
Housebreaking:
Take puppy outside as soon as it finished eating, after play or exercise and as soon as it wakes up. A small puppy should be carried from crate to outside in the morning so that there is not an accident on the way. Praise the puppy when it relieves itself outside. If you are not one to praise excitedly, use a food reward. When the puppy has an accident in the house, tell puppy "NO" if caught in the act. Do nothing if not caught in the act. Take the puppy right outside and praise after puppy relieves itself.
Do not hit, yell, or put puppy's nose in its accident. Shelties are very sensitive. Trust is important, as is the flexibility to make mistakes, as long as one is learning. Housebreaking occurs over several months. Do not expect miracles. Puppy housetraining is much like potty training a child. It occurs over a period of time, not overnight.
You may need to get a pet sitter to visit the puppy half way through the day.
Commands:
We recommend the use of a clicker for training. We have provided a clicker for you, as well as a book to explain clicker training. The clicker is a positive reinforcement tool. You can use it much like to use the word "good". We urge you to read the book we have provided and to apply it to training your dog. Shelties are sensitive dogs and do not take to negative training methods. You must be only positive when training this dog. The results will be astounding. If you get addicted, call us! We will put you in touch with a good obedience/agility trainer in your area. You puppy is very capable of advanced competition, should you chose to do so. Agility, for instance is the greatest way to build a bond, however, basic obedience must come first, and the pup needs to be at least 10 months old before starting agility training.
Correction:
This dog has been raised in a home environment with children. Make sure other children respect this puppy. The puppy deserves respect, just like other family member.
If you ever feel the need to correct this dog, you need to create a situation where the desired behavior is performed and then click and treat that behavior. The negative behavior should be ignored, not scolded. NEVER hit, or allow to be hit, tease, or allow to be teased, scream or nag at this dog. NEVER do anything to cause this dog to fear you. Do not yell at the dog, do not scruff the dog. Our dogs compete at high levels in several disciplines and are NEVER scolded. It is simply unnecessary, and actually unproductive for this sensitive breed.
Grooming:
Lightly spray with water and brush this dog often and thoroughly line-comb or have this dog line-combed once a week. Have this dog trimmed by a sheltie groomer once a month. Bathe or have dog bathed once a month and apply or have applied "Frontline" once every two (2) months.
If you continue with our training and coat maintenance as outlined above, you will be rewarded with a well-tempered beautiful and loyal sheltie.
